Drip
Water droplets are amplified and sonically manipulated through the use of a hydrophone and MaxMsp. By amplifying and augmenting the sound of water, awareness is drawn to the importance of each droplet; provoking consideration as to how we, as individuals, use this vital resource and our attitude towards it. The continuous water cycle also elicits some thought about how we can recycle the water we use.
A water pump extracts water from a tank on the floor and pumps it to a pipe suspended from the ceiling. Droplets fall steadily back to the water below. The sound inside the tank is amplified and manipulated and played back through headphones surrounding the tank. Individuals are encouraged to listen and interact by dropping a collection of small pebbles and shells into the tank.
Drip exhibits the natural sonic and visual beauty of water. By removing water from its original context and bringing it into the gallery space, perhaps its importance can be understood. The sound of dripping water is generally regarded as an irritating background noise, however, perhaps by augmenting this sound and transforming it into something beautiful, a more thoughtful approach to water usage can be achieved. It is also an exploration into how making the audience part of the work, allowing them to interact and create the work themselves, could result in a more engaging and captivating experience.
